Although I've never kept them, I'm very partial to E. longissima (the Aesculapian snake).
These are beatiful and hardy animals, with excellent temperament. Not flashy, but very attractive. They grow to an average of about 4-ft to 4-ft-6", with about 6-ft being the maximum. Not really a very small snake, but I think they're worthy of fair consideration.
