No, I don't think this is a "troll"...and, yes, there is much to be learned. I think that's why beginners (includung myself, having owned snakes for less than a year) come to these forums. There are a great set of posts on the beginner forums during the past week or so concerning the issue of beginners being hesitant to post because they get scorned and laughed at. "LOL" Check out some of Glen's posts on the beginner and general forums. Always tries to be courteous and helpful to those with alot to learn. Lots of folks on this one, too. Let's not forget...we all were beginners once. If you don't have something at least remotely constructive to say, just try to resist the urge to post a put-down. You may well say the same thing about this post, but my intention is to ask folks to actually stop and think before making a rude post. I truly am trying to be constructive and helpful. Now...let's try to give the new snake owner some sound advice, shall we???
Good choice/bad choice?: Rat snakes can be fantastic first snakes...but buying from a store where you have already observed snakes dying in there "care"...? Hopefully the fact that this snake was a new arrival will work in your favor. Maybe it was with the breeder just last week? Now, as already posted, give it at least a few days to settle in, trash the hot rock, get some frozen food, and be patient. Check out this forum and others for answers which are already posted, and then ask some more. MOST of the folks who post here are, indeed, very helpful and will NOT put you down for being new. The rest...just ignore them. Good luck with your new snake. Next time, consider going to a reptile show if there is one in your area (click on "events" when you first go on kingsnake). Or buy directly from a reputable breeder in your area, or by mail if needed.
Again, Good luck! Duffy

:::I purchased my first snake this evening from Pet Co. for a birthday present for myself. I had been in the market looking for a Corn snake but unfortunately the one I had my eye on passed away in Pet Co.'s care. However this evening when I went I found 2 snakes to choose from, an Albino King snake and a Rat snake. The Rat was marked the way I wanted a corn snake to be marked only without all the bright colors. He is though boldly marked in black and grey, maybe some greens. From looking as some pics on here tonight he looks a lot like the "Fox" breed? I have taken a few pics that I wil add tomorrow. I am hoping someone can provide me a little guidence maybe. I bought a small tank (10 gal) but I also have a 29 gallon to use later that I had my iguana in. I purchased a heat rock and updated my heat lamp to a new bulb. Should I use just one? both? The people at Pet Co. gave me conflicting opinions. I have read that heat rocks arent good for snakes but they thought it was needed. Also, I bought him the same day he arrived in the store and he hasnt eaten yet, will it be a problem giving him pre-killed mice? I apologize for all the questions, I just want to make sure my snake is well cared for and healthy. Any information would be helpful. You can also email me - markpopejoy2000@hotmail.com
:::thanks again
