I would like to add that I'm raising some black rats from a county in NY adjacent to the county where the 101" record specimen was found. The growth rate is no greater than average and as hatchlings were 12" to 13" when I got them.
However I breed blacks doing some serious locallity mixxing, and the hatchlings have been as long as 16 1/2 inches, big enough to eat mouse fuzzies, right out of the egg. I hatched some end of July last year measuring 15" out of the egg. One male measured 48" a month ago and he hasn't even been that great of a feeder the whole time. It will be interesting to see how he turns out in 5 years.
Now a question. I'm very well aware that a lot blackrats don't really get all that black as adults and retain a lot of their juvi pattern for life. My question is has anyone known blackrats to retain a lot of pattern at 4' to 5' plus, and then later turn solid black or close to it? Thanks in advance. Alan,
