Hi Joe,
I was in the Crimea many times, but could never see Leopard Rats in their natural habitat, they are extremely rare and secretive snakes nowdays, somewhat more frecuently seen in several Crimean natural reserves. . They live in the Southern Crimean coast only, on the mountain slopes between Sevastopol and Karadag Natural Reserve, the pictured animals were found ocasionally somewhere near Alushta and Massandra by tourists and brought to a couple of small herp exhibitions over there. I purchased both females and just recently finally have bought an adult male to begin their breeding project. I don`t know the best herp areas in Crimea cause I live in the neighbouring region to Kharkiv, but on the slopes just above Gurzuf, we observed several Coluber jugularis and legless lizards Sheltopusiks (Ophisaurus apodus), both Crimean lacertids-Lacerta taurica and saxicola, there`s a chance you could find E.situla there as well and it seems they were observed by people most frecuently in the area between Yalta and Alushta. E.sauromates and Vipera ursini renardi do not live there, they can be found in the steppe part of Crimea only. Hope this helps.
Val
