:My dad comes home with a pretzel container with a black snake in it. I figure since it's November and my dad found it half stiff in a parking lot, I'd keep it over the winter. The only problem is that I have to keep it in this pretzel container 'till I get some equiptment. I'm not sure what kind though. It was caught in suburbs near Philly, so think south-eastern Pennsylvania. It's upper body is mostly black but you can faintly see saddles going down the back. It's belly has a checkerboard pattern like my corn snakes which helps my idea that it is also a rat snake. Any ideas?
It sounds like a black ratsnake (Elaphe obsoleta). If you plan to keep it, you'll need to get it some suitable housing asap. If you can't afford a cage right now go get a rubbermaid or sterilite container and drill some small holes in it for ventilation. As a bare minimum, the snake will need a water bowl, something to hide under and a branch or piece of wood to help with shedding. Some type of heat source such as commercial heating pads should also be used on one end of the cage to create a thermal gradient. It will eat an appropriate size mouse once a week.
Good luck,
Chris
