In Reply to: Black Rat Growth Rate? posted by alex on November 01, 2002 at 13:24:04:
:Hi, I just picked up an approximately 4' male black rat, with no age attached. I'm wondering what their growth rates are like, and if anyone can give me a ball park age. He's got a good girth on him, he's not slender like a juvenile. This is an obsoleta first for me, all I've kept ratsnake-wise are corns, bairds, japanese, and tiger rats, to which I've just added this black and a 'greenish' rat.
:Thanks

Your snake is probably anywhere between 2 and 5 years old, but of course that is just a guess. Growth rates vary depending on many factors such as size of prey ingested, frequency of feedings, temperature, etc. Black rats can reach lengths of 48" or more at one year of age if kept under optimum conditions. Conversely, underfed animals may take 3 or more years to reach this same length. Way too many variables to answer your question with any degree of certainty, IMHO.
