Once it started putting on some length you would have to move up to a 20 gal long. I dont believe you could comfortably house any rat in a small tank. I have a black rat that I am putting into a 20 gal long this weekend. He is 14 or 15 months old. Not very thick yet, but he is putting on the length pretty fast, and will probably start putting on the girth soon.
