I remember reading somewhere that specimens from western populations of Elaphe bimaculata are very difficult to tell apart from E. dione. So your snake may still be an E. bimaculata. Photos aren't conclusive: when I kept red-sided garter snakes as a child, I was confused, because my specimens came from Manitoba and had much smaller red flecks on their sides than the examples in the field guides, which were obviously from the more southern parts of their range.
: Hi all,
: firstly, would you please explain me the (very subtle) difference between E. dione and E. bimaculata. I've got a specimen identified as E. bimaculata, but the photos on the Sacha Korell web site suggest me he is E. dione.
: Then, I'm finding who breed or sell E. mandarina in East Coast, and the price of a subadult specimen.
: Any suggestion welcome
: Thanx
: Mario
