Sexing a black rat snake

I've seed a really big (girth wise) black rat snake, yet mine is full grown and petite. Are males bigger than females or vice versa, and if so is that very reliable. I've heard of a probe being inserting up their cloaca, but I wouldn't want to hurt my snake. Can veterinarians do that safely, or in the end is it not worth it?
