Since they are relatively active snakes, I would make sure the length + width was about equal to the snake adult size.
Assuming the snake will reach 7-8 feet (many get larger), I would try to make a cage that was approximately 4 feet x 2 feet. I would also consider buying one of the commercially available plastic cages rather than making a wooden cage as a wooden cage of that size can be fairly heavy and thus hard to clean.
