For my part, I suspect that the American Elaphe, Lampros and Pits may all have a common "Elaphe-like" ancestor that crossed into NA from Asia. I would also agree that the NA Elaphe, Lampro, and Pit bring up some serious questions about how we define genus and species, at least as far as they are concerned.
