In Reply to: So where do the European Elaphe fall?..... posted by chrish on October 06, 2002 at 11:57:13:
There seem to be multiple clades within the genus. For instance Elaphe dione, E. situla, E. hoenhackeri, and E. bimaculata all are very closely related. E. scalaris has recently been reassigned to Rhynechis (spelling?). E. longissima and E. quatuorlineata (and maybe E. schrencki?) are probably closely related but I really haven't seen enough of them to make a decision. I feel there should be 3 or 4 genera within the current Eurasian Elaphe and some are not even close to being related to the others (for example "Elaphe" janseni, "Elaphe" rufodorsata, and "Elaphe" carinata). Bascially, it's a big mess but I do agree that American Elaphe should be in their own genus.
