About a week and a half ago (9-23), there was some discussion on the weight of a rosy rat, Elaphe guttata. I thought 600+ grams was a bit much for that species. I said I'd make some measurements on my snakes and get back on it. I weighed my adult female Chinese red-headed rat, Elaphe moellendorffi, today. She was 389 grams and is about 4.5 ft. long. She probably has a similar build to a "guttata". Next, I weighed my adult male red-headed rat. I was quite surprised as he weighed in at 883 grams. Of course, he is longer at about 5.5 ft., and much more massive, but I didn't realize a ratsnake could weigh that much at under six feet. I guess pictures sometimes make things look smaller or larger than they really are.
