I have a 4 foot black rat snake that I found injured in the road near my home in central Connecticut. His jaw was askew and bleeding, one eye was filled with blood, and he was having considerable difficulty orienting his body (flipping over as he tried to move). I brought him to the vet i use for my snakes, and he said that the jaw was not broken, the eyeball and socket were intact, and it did not appear that any other bones were broken. He suggested that i just monitor it for a while to see if its injuries improve. It has been just a week and his jaw looks almost normal, his eye is clearing, but it continues to move slowly and have some trouble orienting itself. It also is remarkably docile and does not appear to be stressed when I have picked it up to check injuries. I would like to release it soon, as cold weather is approaching, but I am unsure about its chances of survival. Any ideas about the latest in the season that I could release it? Any other ideas about how to care for a snake with possible traumatic brain injury? Help appreciated.
