::should I switch to a black light before I feed loki his f/t mouse? And when loki is ratling his tail is that a sign that hes not in the mood to be handled?

Elaphe obsoleta (ssp.)Your Everglades is a snake of s. Florida. In the wild it is diurnal in the spring and fall, I believe, but during the extremely hot summer months, it probably is more nocturnal. I would put the food in around late afternoon. If very hungry, it will eat before dark. It might also wait to eat under the cover of darkness. The tail-rattling might mean it is nervous and doesn't want to be watched.

Unless a snake is really tame, they don't like being handled much. Some are more nervous than others, of course. If it's a difficult feeder I always give mine lots of privacy and feeding usually works. You don't always have to be observing your snake eat. One of the reasons we have to use live food at times is because sometimes we might leave the food in the snake's food jug for more than a day. Maybe two. Good luck.
