Just about all the colubrids will do this when they feel threatened. Take a look at these two links and see the difference in heads. Mainly how the head of a racer is more angular and narrow. They seem like to me the eyes look much bigger in a racer too. This may be due to the shape of the head vs. that of the rat snake.

Hope this helps

:i caught a snake sunday....and i was pretty sure it was a rat snake...but then i read up on racers, and it said that racers will rattle their tails in leaves, to scare off enemies....and when i was catching it, that exactly what it did. so it kinda threw me off, and the thing is...a black rat snake, and a black racer, look almost exactly the same (from the pics ive seen) so i was wondering...do i need to know what kind it is, before i properly setup the tank? or will a basic tank setup work for both snakes (by basic i mean dirt...plants...rocks..places for it to hide...big water dish) let me know...and also please tell me if theres any major differences between the snakes.
