: Most locals in rural regions don't refer to the snakes you mentioned as Pituophis, Agkistrodon, and Heterodon either when they are describing "that red chicken snake" they saw in the corn crib last week. Maybe listing in field guides some of the local names given to species would give people a better understanding of what was being described to them while they were in the field.
:I get a kick out of the rather extensive list of common names given in the old Wright and Wrights Hand book of snakes.
