What I mean by proof is this: When I asked K.E. if a complete and accurate scale count had been performed to make sure the animal in question is truly an E. o. obsoleta, he stated that it had not----that he had just assumed that it was a Rat Snake. I'd say that would be a good first step.
A color morph in the wild would be a once in a million (or more) occurance, but it certainly happens. A pattern morph would likewise be a once in a million(s) occurrence. Now what are the odds that a snake would pop up in the wild with both? One in a million to the one millionth power? Wow, that's smokin'! The great Carl Sagan must be rolling over in his grave at the prospect of such a number as that.
I would say that K.E.'s specimen should be DNA tested to see what the relationship is (if any) to other known native Jefferson County Rat snakes from the same locality. That would satisfy me.
