You are right - Those things are EATING MACHINES and they digest their food so fast.
At five feet, I would feet a medium sized rat a week or every 5 days. Eventually when he gets a bit older, his metabolism may slow down a bit, and they will put on more girth (but always remain eating monsters).
I think it is important to feed them in a seperate feeding container because their food responses are SO STRONG. I made the mistake of "just tossing" a thawed out rat in my 7 foot females cage and it took me about a year to erase the habit of her striking at ANYTHING that moves after a cage lid was opened. She would strike at literally anything but not a defensive strike. She just wanted to eat.
