***The key to conservation of species is habitat. In Michigan there's plenty of habitat left for Westerns, thus they're not protected. There's very little habitat left for Easterns, and they are protected. Sure ignorant people kill them, but as long as there's wild areas, they'll always be there to find and treasure. You're only lamenting the few that happen upon human numbskulls. Look at the bigger picture and toughen up :)
