Wow, first of all calm down, chances are it's already gone. If I were you I'd just go do the laundry. If it is a rat or corn snake, sounds like it most likely is, then you have absolutely nothing to worry about. It could still be a corn snake with no black, or a yellow rat snake.
Don't be afraid, these guys are our friends!

PS, just out of curiosity what did the police say when you called them??
:Hello Brian,
:I don't have any site of the snake. I took a look at the picture that you sent me and I walked in a distance looking at it. The snake I saw last night (and your right I saw it in the night when the garage light was on and it was not bright) was lighter in color, paler. Perhaps your right, I did not notice the black, but I truly took a very good look and focused on the snake and truly do not believe there was any black at all on this snake. I am almost postive of it. Any ideas what kind of a snake it would be and whether its poisonous? He/she was thinner than your snake....and around 3ft. I am practically 90% positive there was no black on this snake. I just wish I saw its head whether it was round or triangular but you know, I am glad I didn't see it, maybe that is why I didn't get that frightened? The head was blocked in back of a box I had in there.
:I thank you for giving me information as to what they eat etc. I do have salamanders that are probably this moment going into my garage so it will be getting food....I am positive that I did not see a lump in the snake...and there is no water in my garage, there is a puddle outside the garage just where the opening of the garage is, from a shower we got yesterday. I do hope it just goes to the water and leaves my garage.
:I have laundry to do we are four people here and you can gather how the laundry adds up. Any advice to tell me if I come in contact with this snake? Do they tend to bite or only when they feel threatened. You have no idea how grateful I am for your help. Lynda
