: Well if you really want to know about Rat Snakes, then do what i did, and dont bother waiting... get Rat Snakes: A Hobbyist's Guide to Elaphe and Kin its a T.F.H. Publication, and very informitave about every species of rat snake, including the Asian and European species. I waited for 2 years for this book to come out, and wasn't disappointed. It has lots of colorful pictures, housing, breeding, specific species information and everything. If you REALLY want to learn about rat snakes, get it! Taj:)
"A Monograph of the Colubrid Snakes of the Genus Elaphe Fitzinger" by Klaus-Dieter Schulz is a much (!) better book. The yellow "Ratsnakes" book has got a lot of subspecies info missing that is explained in detail in the monograph. It also has some erroneous info in it. For example the snake pictured on page 140 is not a Twin-spotted Ratsnake (E. bimaculata), but a Dione's Ratsnake (E. dione). It also has two species missing, E. janseni and E. persica. Pictures are nice though... However, if you're serious about Elaphe, get the "monograph" , it's worth it! It is currently the most comprehensive and most up-to-date book on Elaphe species (and subspecies).
Or, let's wait for the revision to be completed...
Best regards,
Sacha
