Hi!
My yellow rat, Shiva, just laid 14 eggs in her tank today!! I've had this snake for over 10 years, and she was an adult when I got her. No clue where she came from, if she was CB or WC, prior to when I bought her in a pet shop.
I've had experience with one clutch of eggs so far (rough greens) but this one has me perplexed! First of all, are these eggs surely sterile? Do rat snakes (or colubrids in general?) lay 'dud' eggs for the hell of it sometimes? I've had her for years, this is surely the LAST thing i ever expected her to be doing!! She just had them a few hours ago, I've taken them out and put them in the vermiculite shoe box like I've done before with my green snake eggs, and it looks like she's got another 3-4" bulge in her.. so she might be retaining eggs.. or hopefully I just interrupted her and she'll have more in the morning (I WILL follow up on this)
Sorry if this is all messed up, I'm excited as hell as I type this. Im sure these eggs are sterile, is there any documentation of a rat snake retaining sperm for 10 years??? Do they typically lay a clutch for the heck of it?
Also, the eggs werent perfect looking.. one was actually broken and the shell was stuck next to another one.. one egg was very large.. some were 'normal' shaped, while a few of those had larger ends then the others...
She's kept in a 60 gallon long tank, in cypress mulch w/ good light heating during the day (her environment goes from 70-85'sh).
Just when I thought she was getting old and senile, she has to throw this at me!! It was a pain getting those eggs out of there btw, she was quite coiled and mad. =)
Any comments or suggestions, anyone?
