:The posts below pose some interesting "research questions"...I have not yet bred snakes, but I did take a pretty comprehensive genetics course in college. I confess, that was a LONG time ago. The primary question for all readers here is...has anyone wound up with normal colored bug-eyed Texas Rats when working with these animals???
From everything that I've read on them, the defect isn't associated with any health problems. It is just a esthetic thing. As for it showing up in normal-coloured lindheimeri, the posts below this cover that, and apparently it doesn't. It would appear that it is a colour-linked trait.
:From what I am reading, it looks like you breeders should treat the bug eye trait like a simple recessive until further evaluation.
I think that it would be a reasonable course of action to treat it as such.
:A friend of mine is breeding, and wound up with a bug-eye. I am thinking about taking it in strictly as a pet. Any reason that I should not (other than ugly), since I don't intend to breed it?
No reason that I can think of. Chances are, it will probably make a good pet. I certainly wouldn't buy one, but I see no reason to "put down" an otherwise healthy animal solely because it is unattractive. If someone wants to give it a good home, it may as well go there. I must say, though, that you are to be commended for your resolve not to breed from it.
