:I'm debating getting into yellow rat snakes, albeit I'm not very familiar with them. Can anyone give me some basic info on them and/or point me to some websites or other reading materials? Do they have any other common names besides 'yellow ratsnakes'? How does their care/temperment/requirements/other attributes differ from those of say... a cornsnake?
Yellow rats are also known as chicken snakes in some areas of the South, due to their occasional habit of entering chicken coops for eggs or chicks. You can care for them in exactly the same way as a corn snake. As these guys love to climb, you may wish to set up an arboreal style cage with a nice branch and perhaps an upper shelf. They tend to be a bit more active when handled than a corn snake. I think it would be pretty neat if someone could breed a canary yellow morph with thin black stripes.
