Yellow rat snakes are not that much different than any other cornsnake, but mine is a little nippy. Its wild caught and was sold to me as an everglades (which may answer your question about the different names.) I find that it bites less and less the more I hold it, but it's still a yearling, so I think it will calm down with age. This is my first snake and I would highly recommend it. It's very hardy and very easy to care for.
