In Reply to: Dwight Good, i have a question posted by Kysnake on August 05, 2002 at 19:43:43:
I have a black rat snake, its about 22 inches and i think it's a female. I was wondering if i could breed it next year. How long do they have to be to be bred (male and female)? I know of another black rat i would like to breed it to but it's about ehe same size, and i don't know the sex.
Usually a female elaphe obsoleta ssp will need to be ~40 inches in length. This is just a general guideline, individual animals will vary. If your snake is 22" now, I doubt she will be big enough by next season. In the wild, rat snakes don't usually breed until their third or even fourth year under normal conditions.
Do they have to brumate or are they like corns and can breed without. I would rather not, to get it up to size.
I'm not sure about your brumation question... it is my belief that the snake breeding season (for rat snakes) only comes once a year, so why take a chance? I brumate all my rat snakes and also corn snakes. I'm sure half a dozen people will post how they never brumate and have excellent results, but I prefer not to chance it. This is my personal approach based on my opinions with no scientific basis whatsoever, :)
Thanks, and do you have an e-mail address i can send a pic to, i dont want to post it for certain reasons.
Let me guess.. you have a top secret morph you are working on?? It's not one of those funky mutants from the Louisville, KY area is it? There sure seems to be something in the water at that locality......
If you simply must email me, try dgood@kih.net , :)
