My first choice would be a Trans-Pecos rat snake. I think they handle the best of all the N. American rat snakes. Next would be a Bairdi or a Gulf Hammock......Bairdi because of their intricate color scheme.......Gulf Hammock because they have the best dispositions of the obsoleta group. Disclosure: I have all of the above and have kept all N. American rat snakes with the exception of Senticolis, at one time or another.
