Sure sounds like a black rat snake. I agree with the post that mentions the red tongue of the Texas Rat. Also, the ground colour varies between pinkish beige and golden beige, and the darker blotches only cover about 50% of the dorsal skin area. The belly colour is a pale peachy pink. In the Black Rat (black phase), the ground colour is white or light bluish grey and almost imperceptible except when the skin is stretched, the tongue is black, and the belly is shaded opalescent white through opalescent dark blue-grey, and sometimes has a yellowish lateral margin between the ventrum and dorsum. In all the obsoletas, the head is usually of a solid colour, as opposed to the arrow markings of the guttatas.
