Texas rat snake. If it has the normal two, it's probably a black rat. That might have to do with telling the sex of any Texan. HaHa. Of course, I am talking about snakes right? Sorry, but Jaffo brought it up.
I hate it when a pet store says they the snake they have is a cross bred. That's a perfect out for the store. I agree Jaffo on the w/c vs. cb temperament thing. Any snake captive bred or wild caught may have a temperament of never calming down. Most of the rap on w/c's being more agressive to me is that a w/c is more defensive at first from defending itelf in the wild as opposed to a captive environment. Most of my w/c's have calmed down with feeding and handling to be some of my best snakes to handle. My F1 Kentucky black rats I got last year are the most belligerant snakes I have. If it's not food, they aren't having it. I don't know if they will ever change to be able to just reach in and pick them up to handle. I still go in and pick them up with a little caution and time and get them out and handle them. They are one of my favorite snakes in my collection. Now I received 3 w/c Texas rat snakes 2 months ago (all females) that were just collected. One is probably a yearling, one is just breedable and a big 'ole gal' that has had it pretty rough. The yearling calmed down first and now the 2 + year old is just starting to be calm down. Well, the big ole gal ain't even having it yet. My wife says I change her water and feed as if she was a "hot" snake (putting something over her or isolating her to clean the enclosure or change water. Del and I probed all three when they arrived to sex them. The big one was all over us and Del's a very good snake handler. Of course, I've had to handle her several times now to get layers of old shed and lots of eye caps off. I think there is still an eye cap left, but she has cleaned up real nice. Well,I'll go back up to the original post and maybe touch base a little on the original question. Good luck Jaffo. Del says he and I have to make it your way for some herping or whatever sometime.
