Can anyone tell me why there are so many color variants found in Blue Beauty Snakes (Elaphe taeniura ssp.)? My group consists of 5.5 animals which range in color from olive green/yellow/blue to grey/blue to silver blue and I've got one male that I swear looks like it was out crossed with a Cave Dweller (E. t. ridleyi). The first 50% of his body is solid yellow/khaki then it develops into the typical Beauty Snake pattern. Is all this just polymorphism? Or is it locality specific? Or, perhaps, the range of Blue Beauties overlaps with other Beauty Snake subspecies producing natural intergrades. Any thoughts on this subject will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris
