THE NORTHERN ECHO (York, UK) 23 December 99 Snake won't play mouse trap
Snowy the mouse faced the ultimate gamble to try to tempt a snake down a chimney - as an offering of live bait.
Ki, a 6ft Californian rat snake, disappeared up the chimney of owner Joanne Bain's home and all attempts to get her down have come to nothing.
Joanne, of Wilberforce Avenue, in York, even borrowed a friend's pet mouse to try to encourage the slippery rodent-eater to forsake her lair.
But before anyone gets too concerned about Snowy's fate, the mouse stayed securely in its cage - so Ki could look, but not touch.
However, even this ploy has failed to have any effect, with Ki refusing to come out of her cosy hiding place.
Joanne said: "I can see her up the chimney but, so far, she has not come down for the mouse. She must have wrapped herself around a warm pipe and, apart from knocking the chimney down, I don't know what I can do."
Joanne was given the snake as a house-warming present - but has had to turn her central heating off to try to cool the chimney down to force Ki out, so far without success.
She said: "My mum has always had snakes and I've been brought up with them so when I got Ki I thought she was beautiful."
And, just for the record, Joanne feeds Ki on frozen mice, fearing the live ones would attack the snake.
