: Hey, I have a question for all you keepers of black rats. A while back, I thought I heard someone say that black rats are known for their nasty temperament. I've kept all kinds of herps for a while now but back in October I was given an adult male black rat which was my first ever non-boid snake. He'd lived in the office of a nature education center and was used for presentations. He is absolutely the tamest snake in the world and I was wondering if he's an exception or if I just heard wrong and am asking a dumb question.
: Thanx, Phil
I've noticed that blackrats I've found in the north & east (NY,MD,DE) have been mellower than the ones I found in the west (KS). Almost all the black rats I've seen in the wild were relatively mellow when found, however, I noticed the ones from KS developed an attitude after being kept in captivity, while others I've kept mellowed. Personally, I think that the closer black rats get to TX rat range, the meaner they get.
