But my Peterson guide says that "When cornered in the field, many of these snakes literally stand up and fight..." This is in reference to the ratsnakes of the Eastern/Central North America in general, not just the black rat.
One would assume that if a large adult black rat did this it would be an impressive sight!!!
From what I have heard, many young black rats can be a little jumpy, but they usually become pretty docile with age and handling. Mine are yearlings, and they are super tame. Duffy
: Hey, I have a question for all you keepers of black rats. A while back, I thought I heard someone say that black rats are known for their nasty temperament. I've kept all kinds of herps for a while now but back in October I was given an adult male black rat which was my first ever non-boid snake. He'd lived in the office of a nature education center and was used for presentations. He is absolutely the tamest snake in the world and I was wondering if he's an exception or if I just heard wrong and am asking a dumb question.
