In Reply to: What is THE best rat snake 4 a beginner...besides a corn? posted by DaveL on June 07, 2002 at 17:13:02:
I don't know what you're looking at in a rat snake that a corn doesn't have. I would pick a Great Plains rat snake. There's several breeders on this forum that breed them and if you check with them now, you might be able to get on a list for a lone male. The fourth or fifth snake I ever obtained was a Great Plains rat snake from a friend that was thinning his collection. I had him for over a year and finally made him available to a friend's son who wanted a snake just like my Emoryi. I miss that Great Plains rat snake. Two of the best rat snakes out there are Bairdi for North America and Dione for Asian and are great to have in your collection. My Texas Bairdi came from Adam Block and my C. China diones came from Chad Fuchs. I'm looking forward to getting a pair of S. Korean diones in a couple weeks from Terry Cox. I read on this forum that Terry's S. Korean dione female dropped 16 eggs a couple days ago. Those would be a great additon to any collection even if you're a beginner. Good luck Dave.
