If you're looking for a North American ratsnake I would say the best even if you include the corns would be a bairds rat. I would rate them all around in this order for a first snake:
Bairds Rat
Corn
Russian Rat
Either one you go with you can't go wrong. If it was me picking a first snake for myself I may go with the Russian and while I've never been struck at by either both the bairds anf the Russian are large ratsnakes and can be scary if you're already on the edge.
