This story starts off with me going down to breakfast. My mom tells me that our neighbor saw a large snake across the street while walking one of their 3 dogs. I immediately assume that a) it's a black rat, b) probably no more than 4 feet, tops, that would more than qualify as "big" for most people, and c) that it's long gone, the first sighting was a couple hours ago.
But I figure, hey, maybe not, so when I have to take our beagle for a walk, I walk down the other side of the street. And my dog finds a squirrel in a tree. Under the tree is a large black branch that's curved. It's the black ratsnake. Bob, the dog, steps on it. I have to grab the rat before it runs away. Grabbing it near the neck, it turns and bites me once, but then I've got the head secured and he is definitely NOT happy, but he can't bite. I walk back to the house, where my parents and brother laugh at me for holding a large black ratsnake. We take a few pictures, figure he's a shade under 6 feet, which is the largest snake I've ever caught and/or held, and then I put him in a plastic container with a SUPPOSEDLY escape-proof lid. For good measure, we put a book on top of the lid. Then we go off to pick strawberries and various other errands. We come back to find that he's pushed the lid off, and has escaped.

Ech, I still have the bite mark to prove it. And some pictures, which I shall post a bit later.
