Brian's suggestions are right on target with my experience (black rats and greenish rats). While it is true that these snakes can live for months and sometimes years without a hotspot, I think it is best that they have one. In nature snakes have access to a wide variety of temperature ranges - they should be offered a similar environment in captivity. While some snakes can pass aspen through their digestive systems, it's probably not a good idea for then to ingest it regularly. I'd feed the snake in a seperate container.
