On ingesting aspen with the meal. I always feed my snakes in a seperate container. I do this for a couple of reasons.

I have a corn snake and a blackXgray rat intergrade and have both a warm and a cool side. I would give the snake a warm side just for the simple reason that if it needs to it can go on the warm side. Snakes in the wild can be found laying out on rocks and logs in the sunshine. This can help ward off sickness too. So I would say it cant hurt and may make them a little more active.
1. There is no chance the snake will ingest anything with the meal.
2. The snake will not associate your hand with food everytime you put your hand in the cage. I feed them in a seperate container and wait 10 minutes once the last mouse is gone. This lets the snake get out of its "feed" mode. I then transfer it back to the "home". I have never had a snake regurge doing this, and plus you can watch the snake while it eats, making sure there are no problems. I never feed live adult mice. I always pre-kill them first. Pinkies, fuzzies, and small hoppers are fine to feed live.
Hope this helps, and I enjoy my rat snake too. Loads of fun!
: I have an albino black rat and an albino greenish rat, both '01 and about 19 inches long. I am new to this, but did my homework before buying, and decided on ratsnakes for lots of reasons. Two questions: Although most of the books and info suggest a warm and cool side of the cage, I have also heard from what seem to be reliable sources that this is not absolutely critical for black rats and greenish rats. I have had the black rat since Feb. at room temp, and she is doing great. Got the greenish rat last month, also room temp, and he also is feeding (and clearly digesting) like a champ. So what can you all tell me? Especially keepers of black or greenish rats, who have tried to keep them at room temp without extra heat.
: Also, my greenish rat always manages to get aspen with his meals! Has anyone ever had or heard of internal damage due to aspen "splinters". If so, that would be reason enough to feed him in a separate place.
: I am new to snakes this year, and already think that the elaphe are awesome! I will add heat if this will give my snakes a better chance for good health, but I would prefer to keep doing what I am doing if they will be fine. Thanks to all. Mark
