: : : : does anybody know how to deter black rat snakes from living under my backyard cement slab porch. last year i caught six of them (5'-6' long) and safely re-located them in a nature preserve in my neighborhood. i've now discovered three more this Spring. I certainly don't want to kill them, but i would like to keep them away from my house!!! any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
OK...We're going to round up some of these critters and move them off into the nature preserve near Ken's house. We are looking for advice of any kind...how far away will maximize their survival while keeping them from under Ken's porch??? Other tips??? Ken does not want to hurt these guys, but he wants them relocated, so let's here some suggestions. We will do a roundup some weekend morning soon. Anyone interested???
: : : Ken, most of us think you are pretty lucky to have such great wildlife in your yard. What kind of rodent population do you have? Do some of them come inside in the winter and visit? Remember: Less ratsnakes MAY result in more rodents. They are presently keeping them under control, so you may ask which you like better. I also have to ask...Why do you want to get rid of them? I know...most folks are at least somewhat scared by them... We give you lots of credit for not wanting to harm them...lots of people are not as snake-friendly. Thanks. But really...they are probably doing you alot more harm than good.
: : : Maybe you could round up some of the babies and list them on kingsnake.com's for sale links! They could become a business...you would be keeping them somewhat more under control. And you would LOVE them because they would be making money for you. Just a thought. Mark
: : ...sorry...I mean they are doing you more GOOD than HARM...hopefully everyone realized right away that I put that in wrong. We LOVE ratsnakes!
: -- yes, i realize that the presence of the snakes must mean they are finding ample food sources. last year, i captured/released the others after i realized how many were around AND the fact they had found their way into my crawlspace/basement! i have since taken care of their "route" into the crawlspace... i actually don't mind if they are around my property -- i think i would just prefer if they weren't up at the house (right at the patio door)! i also realize by completely removing the snakes disrupts the natural balance of wildlife in my yard.
: most other people i know have suggested just killing them but i don't want to take that measure (yet).
: if anybody is interested in obtaining FREE ratsnakes let me know (i'm in SW Ohio) cuz i wouldn't know how to ship them out to folks.
