Hi, KJ.
I questioned the validity of the melanistic emoryi at first too. You can go back to a previous post referring to a "Classifieds" listing in April. I don't happen to have the URL at this time.
As an afterthought, I realized I came on a little strong though. I'm allowing room for the possibility that certain snakes exist w/o my knowing anything about it. My thoughts were that a snake as unique as a melanitic emoryi, or hypo emoryi for that matter, should have been talked about on the forum before.
The point was also made that there are many hybrids between E. guttata and E. emoryi, or subspecies of guttata, whichever side you pick there. It is very difficult to tell when a corn or G.P. rat is a hybrid, or pure. I personally would never buy a hybrid or any mutation of emoryi unless I examined the snake closely myself. With respect to Don, however, I tried to make room for him to make his case that these are legitimate snakes, which is what he was trying to do in his last posts. He put up pics of the hypos and melanistic and gave considerable info on the history as he knew it. I think each person interested in pure emoryi should take considerable caution in the possibility of investing a large amt. of money for a new project here.
Personally, I have my doubts whether the w/c melanistic is really melanistic, and also whether it is really an emoryi, but photos on the forum don't show the snakes as well as seeing them in person. It's difficult to be very accurate. Also, I don't think it's been shown that the hypos were wild collected as hypos. You'd have to go back to the original owner to get the story. I have my own projects going with emoryi, where I'm getting hypo, plus amelanistic genes into my favorite emoryi lines, but I would never call the offspring anything but a hybrid. We would have to be very trusting to just go by a person's word that a snake is pure, if it's any kind of emoryi. I personally, would want to see the original w/c caught speciman.
I wish "Don" good luck, but I also think all potential buyers should be forwarned of the possibilities of the lack of authenticity with these snakes. I believe it is the burden of the seller to show some kind of evidence to back up statements that their animals are purebred. Especially, on the KS Forums, where so much information is passed, and many people rely on what they learn here, people have to be accountable for what they are asking us to believe. I mean no offense to anyone, but many of us are honest and will only work with others who are honest too. This is a public forum open to scrutiny by all, so there will always be questions, and everyone should be prepared to defend their positions on anything. Just my 2 cents, so take it for what it's worth. Nice talking...later...TC.
PS:( For some reason it's saying, Jan 11th, in the "Posted By box". It should read May 11th.
