Stazsko and Walls' Ratsnake Book is nice, but not very reliable. For example, the very yellow snake that's labeled as "Twin Spotted Ratsnake (Elaphe bimaculata)" is actually a "Dione's Ratsnake (Elaphe dione)". Other info in that book is questionable as well.
The best source for info on Elaphe species is Klaus-Dieter Schulz's book "A Monograph of the Colubrid Snakes of the Genus Elaphe Fitzinger". It has a ton of pictures and drawings, and excellent information about each species and subspecies of Elaphe. Almost sounds like sales pitch doesn't it... Sorry if it does, but I really like that book. It doesn't come cheap though, I think it costs between $130.- and $150.-.

: Hi.
: Does anyone know of an inexpensive and accurate source of info on differentiating between different subspecies of beauty snakes (E. taeniura)? I have what was called a "Chinese beauty" when I acquired it, but in Staszko & Walls, it seems closest to "Taiwan beauty". I was thinking about finding this snake a mate sometime in the future, and I don't want to look for the wrong subspecies. Perhaps there's a web site that has pix of all of the different (non-mutant) subspecies.
: Thank you.
