Remember, the animal rights activist are saying that WE AS HERPERS are doing damage just by taking snakes out of the wild for breeding and education. As far as the cruelty issue, DEFINE CRUELTY. OKAY NOW DEFINE IT THROUGH THE EYES OF AN ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST !!! and you will see petting your cat in there somewhere. From our standpoint captive breeding is important for all species, especially threatened and endangered species. It shouldn't be so hard to get permits, but for now we need to just pray that not too many of these creatures become fire ant food or road kill before some productive changes can be made.
In closing I just want to point out that when we are out in the field that the people that hate snakes are our friends provided they haven't been cussed out by other herpers. They are the ones who are going to welcome us on their land with open arms. Also the rattlesnake round-up people will be on our side when it comes to dealing with PETA and HSUS, so lets educate not alienate them.
