I occasionally find ratsnakes here in southern Illinois that are brown with darker brown blothes. I've both assumed, and been told, that they were natural intergrade black x gray rats. Since neither of these subspecies themselves are brown, where is the odd coloration comming from? Is it possible (although I doubt it) they could be prairie king hybrids?
I also find many large black rats (most with red speckling)if I go farther west towards the Mississippi River.
