According to K. D. Schulz ('96), friesi is endemic to Taiwan. E. t. schmackeri is "confined to the Japanese Ryu-kyu Archipelago, where it has so far been found on the islands of Haterumajima, Irabujima, Iriomotejima, Ishigakijima, Kohamajima (a small island between Iriomotejima and Ishigakijima), Kurimajima, Miyakojima and Shimojishima (Takara 1962)".
