1) Rat snakes climb. Give him some branches to climb over. All snakes try to escape, incidentally, so the behaviour you describe is not necessarily abnormal.
2) Get rid of the rock. Put the pad and lamp at one end of the cage. Aim for 75-85°F, but it depends on the species, which you didn't specify.
3) Depends on how big/old the snake is. A hatchling can eat a pinky every few days. One two feet long can eat a fuzzy or more a week. Give us species and length and we will have a better idea.
: I just recieved my first rat snake as an early xmas present and have a few questions;
: 1) Ever since I brought him home he has spent most of the time between the top of the terrarium and the lid, is this normal, or could it have something to do with the substrate,
: 2) I purchased a heater rock, a heating pad, and a heat lamp, which is the best for maintaining the proper temperature of the tank and what should the temperature of the tank be at night,
: and lastly how many pinkies does a young rat snake eat when feeding? thanks.
