Hey Chris. This is Steph from the GHS. It depends on if it is a juvenile or an adult. I've never had too much trouble getting adults of either group to eat pre-killed mice. However, juvenile coachwhips are one of the most difficult snakes I've ever raised.

: I assume that many of you have read Rossi and Ross's books "The Snakes of the US and Candada -- their care in captivity".

: If you have not read it, you should. Great books.

: At any rate, the authors use a rating system of 1 to 5 with 1 being the easiest species to care for and 5 being the most difficult.

: So Coluber ssp. get a rating of 3 and Masticophis ssp. get a rating of 4.

: So I'm just curious what people think of this? I've kept three or four subspecies of racers and two species/3 subspecies of Masticophis. All were wild caught adults or subadults.

: Without exception I've found Masticophis easier to care for so I would have this rating flipped around. Pretty trivial issue but I'm curious to see what you think.

: Opinions?
