: Here is a photo of my newest addition to my family. He (She?) has yet to be named. I'm ashamed to say he was an impulse purchase. It's colors amazed me immediately and I figured I'd get the specific details of care at home. So, I get home and hope to find a care sheet for him and I find nothing. Based on his habitat it looks like there isnt too much in the way of temp/humidity I need to worry about.. However, I'm unsure if he'll require a UV source. He has eaten a fuzzy, but is there anything else he needs in the way of food that the mouse can not provide? How often should he eat? His overall length is about 35" (he is a fast buggar and doesnt particularly care to be handled) I've currently got him on crushed walnut shells for a substrate.. He seems to enjoy burrowing and hiding.. Good/bad? Anyway, thanks for any advice.

rick: Its a male, The females are more greenish and lack the blue color. Do you know what sub species he is? Most that are available are Drymobius margaritiferus occidentalis (Jeweled Racer) from out of Honduras. All the pictures that I've seen of Drymobius margeriterferus margariterfus(speckled racer) look similiar but seem to lack the red to orange colors. These snakes have a very high metabolism and need to eat alot. When they are hungry the will eat anything including other smaller snakes(not each other). Gold fish with ocassional vitamin supplement are the best diet. They will eat every other day in the morning. They breed like clockwork every spring laying their eggs in April. Temperature 80 to 90 with slightly cooler temps at night and during the winter month seems fine for them. They are secretive and prefer a heavily planted vivariun with bushes to climb in. Yours has alot more reddish coloring then mine do, very pretty, good luck!
