If you work at or own a wildlife center, you are automatically considered one of those professionals in lab coats who's word is truth. SO it probably is a good experience for you. If you were to just invite a reporter over to your home to speak to them about your reptiles in the home, you will be skewed into a different light.

:While some reporters do thwart the truth in efforts to sensationalize an article for the sake of a greater reading audience, my experiences with the media have been extremely positive. Our wildlife center (and myself) have been featured in many of the newspapers/mags/radio/local tv/etc. in our area (Chicago) and I can only think of a couple of occasions where they really messed up (due to shear ignorance....a picture of one of our burms said "here's Rob Carmichael holding a 16' chain kingsnake"...that was more funny that something that upset me). Our facility has received large amounts of donations/sponsorships/expsosure from these articles which we never would have identified had it not been for the media. If you go out of your way to form relationships/networks they can be your best friend and I have found that the many positives that have come from the excellent publicity FAR outweigh the occasional blunders. Perhaps I am the exception and am just very lucky but I will give one vote for the media.

::They'll just twist and/or edit any positive interview to make herpers look like maniacal, meth snorting hicks that shouldn't own "dangerous" animals. I don't trust 'em. Neither should anyone else. My .02.
