: The first year it was produced (I don't believe McCurley had anything to do with it unless he was working with a different company at the time) the breeder circulated photos at some of the expos saying what kind of snake do you think this is? On the back it said "Borneo Bat Eater." The name was coined as a joke because the snake obviously didn't look like anything anyone had ever seen before.

: The name was a joke...and it stuck.
